We’ll realise your vision.
One of our most demanding projects to date was the build of “Eugen Seibold”, a deeply innovative sailing vessel for the research of the environment.
We received this order from the Swiss Werner Siemens Foundation, and the new boat was delivered in autumn 2018. Since than she has been used by scientists from all over the world for climate and ocean research, managed by the renowned MAX PLANCK Institute.
Many thanks to Professor Gerald Haug, now President of LEOPOLDINA (German National Academy of Sciences), Director of the Max Planck Institute and Professor at ETH Zurich, for navigating this project through many obstacles into today’s safe waters. We also thank the Werner Siemens Foundation for the trust they put in us with this build.
Thanks to an advanced hybrid diesel-electric drive and a large battery bank. Perhaps the YX PURE is the greenest research vessel in the world. Its two-bladed propeller allows the batteries to be recharged under sail even at hull speed.
The hull is mostly made of classic glass fibre, with carbon fibre reinforcements. Her elegant lines come from the pen of Lorenzo Argento. Nevertheless, the requirements for the "Eugen Seibold" are very different to those of a private yacht. Due to an oversized hull, the research sailer weighs a maximum of 44 tonnes fully loaded with equipment.
The "Eugen Seibold" is named after a German marine researcher, and supports scientists and others in researching climate change. Its main task is to carry out long-term observations in certain marine regions with a comparatively low budget.
Sail controls are hydraulic, as well as the lifting A-frame gantry on the transom. This unique fitting can drag nets or raise water samples from up to 2500 metres’ depth. The samples are packaged below deck and deep-frozen. In addition to a 170hp six-cylinder diesel, a 288 Volt generator and two electric drive motors with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries were also installed.
The interior is user-oriented and practical. Key features include the second companionway to the aft deck, as well as the deckhouse. Eight berths are offered by the YX PURE, in addition to some laboratory space.
The "Eugen Seibold" was financed by the Swiss Werner Siemens Foundation, which specialises in research funding. The sponsor is the German Max Planck Institute.
In the development of the YX, we are constantly incorporating the experience of the YX PURE "Eugen Seibold", which is currently on a worldwide research expedition.
This gives you the assurance that there will be no surprises from the boat itself on your expeditions. We laminate the hull soundly with glass fibre and epoxy resin to absorb rough treatment, as well as Kevlar and carbon reinforcements in the bow area. In the interests of safety, the YX has a heavier lay-up than our other models.
All deck areas have generous access and a high fixed railing instead of guardwires. Helm the YX from behind the protection of the coachroof, or from the comfort of the deck-level saloon. A powerful engine and huge tank capacity for a yacht of this size leaves no doubt that the YX should sail far from marinas.
The Explorer of YYachts was developed from the research vessel “Eugen Seibold” which we built. Contsructed for traveling to all regions of the world. The YX feels just at home during summer in the Mediterranean Sea as in autumn in the Norwegian fjords or in a small harbor in Greenland. Its your choice.
From the all-round safety glass deck saloon, you have your ship and sail in view at all times – no matter what weather conditions or temperatures prevail in the cockpit. Otherwise maintenance-free and self-sufficient are at the top of the specifications.
The high deckhouse with its deep, vertical panes of safety glass gives you a fantastic all-round view without having to leave the saloon. As a fixed element, we plan the saloon and pantry in each version in the deck saloon. Once safely at anchor, slide open the door that connects the saloon to the protected cockpit. The cosy seating and the sunbathing areas have been designed so that you can use the outdoor spaces even in wind and at lower temperatures.
With its 6 metre beam, the YX offers enormous space on deck and below. The owner‘s cabin extends to the full width of the boat, with a luxurious carbon-fibre bathtub and private deck access. We can also completely separate the owner and crew areas.
As with all YYachts, you can also choose from different equipment levels in the YX, according to your travel plans. Whether you want to sail with guests, crew or a skipper, almost all variations are possible.
The Tripp 90 will be equipped with a lifting keel. The use of carbon fibre for hull, deck, interiors and the rigg makes the yacht fast and agil also during races in which she will participate. Planning and execution of the construction reflect the highest expectations which sets the yard itself. Michael Schmidt Yachtbau delivers the client a tailor made yacht according his precise specification
We have been chosen by an American customer, a very knowledgeable sailor, to build his new yacht together with Bill Tripp as naval architect and Winch Design for the interior. The Custom Division of YYachts is currently building his Tripp 90 semi raised deck saloon yacht, which is due to be launched in spring 2021.
