LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION – SAILING YACHTS MADE OF CARBON
When the founder of YYachts, Michael Schmidt, started building carbon yachts in the 1980s, he was confronted with the scepticism of the yachting community that the yachts were too fragile. Based on the single-tonne Düsselboot and Espada, two highly successful regatta yachts, Schmidt’s shipyard built the three-quarter-tonne Blaupunkt and Gaviosa entirely in carbon. What happened when they collided in the World Championship? Nothing! A new technology in boat building was born.
Today, carbon fibre is the futuristic material that will revolutionise the coming decades. It was first used in the aerospace industry and then in high performance sports such as Formula 1, the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race.
At YYachts, the hull, deck, interior structure and rigging are all designed and built using carbon fibre. With very high strength and stiffness, yet low weight, it is the ideal material to produce our lightweight, luxurious, easy to sail carbon yachts.
The high weight saving not only improves sailing performance. Even in light winds, YYachts’ models sail at a very good speed. This means that there is little need to move under power and fuel consumption is significantly reduced. Sailing a YYacht is one of the most sustainable ways of getting around on the water.
Our light and fast carbon yachts are the epitome of sailing pleasure. They owe their ease of handling to our ability to constantly rethink sailing. As we say:
YYachts – Keep it simple: Look good. Sail easy.
